My name is Constance, I am 25 years old from Vereeniging. I completed matric in 2015 and enrolled at a college to study Information technology (IT). I struggled to find employment afterwards and got part -time general work that was not at all related to my qualifications. Before I got into the YES Programme I was home and tirelessly searching for employment. I was fortunate in that period to have a family that supported me through being unemployed, however, to generate income for myself I sold handbags and clothes in my community.
One day as I was going through Facebook I came across the YES opportunity at Afrika Tikkun on the social media platform and applied. What qualified me for the opportunity was my qualification in IT because they needed a person to work as technical support. I am hosted as Admin and Technical Support at Jeppe College. I assist lecturers with IT related tasks such as configuring computers, fixing hardware, installing software and question papers.
The programme was eye opening as I had a qualification but no practical experience. In the programme I am learning and getting exposed to the world of work and IT. I am more knowledgeable about the tactics in the IT world and can handle tasks on my own. My host site is very understanding and always willing to help when I encounter challenges. I am very grateful for the opportunity to gain experience and grow. I want to own an internet café in my community. To YES, the sponsors and Afrika tikkun, I really appreciate the empowerment. Please continue affording the same opportunities to more youths and changing lives.
